Welcome to the Savoy

Synopsis
Welcome to the Savoy is an immersive experience that invites viewers to discover the atmosphere, history and values of the Savoy Ballroom, an iconic dance hall located on Lenox Avenue between 140th and 141st Streets in Harlem, New York.
Opened in 1926, the Savoy Ballroom is recognised as one of the first integrated ballrooms in the United States. It stood out for its policy of welcoming dancers and artists of all backgrounds, a rare occurrence at a time when segregation was the norm.
‘The first place in the world that black and white walked through the door together was the Savoy. They were joined by a simple thing called Swing.’ - Norma Miller, ‘Queen of Swing’
Welcome to the Savoy offers an immersive journey into the Art Deco décor of the Savoy Ballroom in the late 1930s, at the height of its splendour. ‘The World's Finest Ballroom’ welcomed the greatest jazz musicians to its twin stages, and the dances born on its mahogany floor - notably the Lindy Hop - continue to thrill audiences around the world today. The Savoy was ‘the heart and soul of Harlem’.
